Those who are experiencing bladder control problems suffer frequency and urgency to urinate that resulted to loss of urine involuntarily. Sometimes with unknown cause, the smooth, layered detrusor muscle abnormally contracts causing high pressure in the bladder and subsequently urgency to urinate. The detrusor muscle that surrounds the bladder, in good condition contracts and relaxes correspondingly to the amount of urine in the bladder and the start of micturation. When urine is flowing, the detrusor muscle contracts and the sphincter relaxes then after emptying the bladder the detrusor relaxes and the sphincter contract.

Normally, a person can decide when to void through the nervous system. If a person wants to void, the nervous system automatically is in charge of the process. A person has a choice to cease urination by squeezing the sphincter while voiding causing the urge to stop briefly. However, if more urine is being produce, the information to and from the brain requires immediate action and increases the desire to urinate. Stress incontinence increases pressure of the bladder that’s why sphincter does not close causing leakage. The muscles that help support the bladder was weaken. Urge incontinence was caused by twitching of the bladder muscles. This results to urinating before reaching the toilet room.

Other problems associated with incontinence are falls and fractures due to swift motion to reach the toilet, skin irritations and infections due to alteration in the skin by extra moisture and sleep disturbances due to waking up at night to void. The good news is that there are available treatments to at least control bladder problems if one cannot be cured.
